As Christians, we want everything we do to be pleasing to God. But how can we know our career desires are God’s plan for our lives? Jonathan Malm at Relevant Magazine provides the following helpful guidance.

It ultimately brings glory to God.

We spend 8+ hours a day at work. It’s imperative that these hours offer a chance to make life-enhancing impacts that honor God. God would never want you to do something that is shady, unethical, or contrary to his Word. Rather, your career ambitions should be demonstrative of what God has asked of you – to bring good things to life.

It will benefit others.

According to Douglas Schuurman, author of Vocation: Discerning Our Callings in Life, a vocation “is not the fulfillment of the self but the glory of God and the welfare of the neighbor.” Rather, your vocation should enable you to make a contribution to the common good.

This can be in the form of an ethical leader who inspires good in others. It can also mean accepting a position that will bring you geographically closer to extended family and friends with whom God has called you to support in special ways.

Jonathen Malm warns, Any dream that involves taking advantage of people or capitalizing on someone else’s misfortune isn’t from God. Stay away from any business endeavor or plan like that.

It Will Seem Bigger Than What You Can Handle On Your Own.

God wants you to dream big, and He will provide the support you need to achieve your dreams. Trust that your ambitions are from God if they increase your level of responsibility and your ability to honor him in your success.

“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20).

What matters most in the end is that your ambitions are ones that honor God and serve others in a way that magnifies His love for us. Get information on how SAU’s Master’s degree programs can enrich your faith, broaden your professional network and make you more marketable in your field.
