God is the potter. You are the clay. Think of our online Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation & Leadership (MSFL) program as the wheel at which God works to form you holistically, heart and mind.

Developed under the guidance of Richard J. Foster, founder of Renovaré, the MSFL program is one of only three like it in the world. Delivered primarily online, this master’s-level spiritual formation program combines knowledge, practice, theology, contemplation and spirituality in a way that encourages personal and communal spiritual health.

Richard Foster Jr, Founder of RenovareI give my highest endorsement to Spring Arbor University’s Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation & Leadership. I have followed the development of this program from its inception and know each of the professors who teach in it. – Richard J. Foster, founder of Renovaré

Grow in Christ more than you ever imagined possible.

Although designed to fit into your busy life, this online degree does require a significant amount of dedication and schedule organization. You will  have the opportunity to learn and deepen your faith face to face with others through several residencies and retreats, including a week-long residency in Guatemala on social justice.

For us it is really important that you have the chance to grow and deepen your academic reflection on spiritual formation as you are forming deeper community with your cohort. – Eric Magnusson, director, MSFL

The Guatemala Residency

The Guatemala residency is a once-in-a-lifetime experience of not just studying social justice and culture, but also of being immersed in the tangible realities that Guatemalans face today. Together with peers from your program, you participate in educational trips in the morning and lectures in the afternoon. You visit the Guatemala National Cemetery (which overlooks the city dump), the National Cathedral and Marketplace, the Forensic Anthropology Foundation of Guatemala and other sites around the country.

Domestic Residencies

Our domestic residencies are designed to give you face-to-face access to nationally known leaders and practitioners in the field of spiritual formation and leadership. These week-long intensive seminars are hosted at peaceful retreat centers; they consist of a mixture of lectures, small group dynamics, personal reflection, spiritual exercises, cohort community formation, and reading and writing assignments.
