The Verse of the Year for the 2014-15 academic year at Spring Arbor University is Luke 10:27-28: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'
The above scripture comes to us from an encounter Jesus had with a lawyer sometime during the Judean part of Jesus’ ministry. The lawyer asked Jesus what he had to do to inherit eternal life. In essence, is was a question about what Jew could do to be saved. But Luke tells us that the lawyer has an underlying motive, "to test Jesus" on how well he would answer difficult theological questions – a test to see if he can expose Jesus' naiveté.
In this case and many others recorded in the Bible, Jesus replies with a question of his own. " 'What is written in the Law?' Jesus replies 'How do you read it?' " (10:26) The answer was of course, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” To which Jesus assumes the role of expert on the Law, "You have answered correctly."
