What to do when times get tough in grad school

As a working adult and graduate student, it’s not unusual to find some days are easier to stay motivated than others. You’re human, after all! To stay motivated even during the busiest of times, it’s important to be proactive. Below are four things you can do now to help you on your journey toward a master’s degree.

  • Find a sympathetic ear in another graduate student, your Student Success Advisor, or friends and family outside of your program. Support is essential to your success as a graduate student
  • Organize your day, week and month in a way that forces you to manage your time. And, be realistic with your goals. Buy a planner, mark down all of your daily responsibilities and reward yourself for achieving daily goals
  • Cultivate a “buddy system” where you and a fellow student review one another’s progress. Your Student Success Advisor also will be helpful in this area
  • Use a divide-and-conquer strategy for bigger assignments. Instead of focusing on the assignments as a whole, break them down in small parts with mini-goals you can achieve an hour at a time
