Key studies on students with learning disabilities

It’s been ten years since President Bush signed the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, which promised to help children learn better by promoting accountability for results, enhancing parent involvement, using proven practices and materials, providing more flexibility, and reducing paperwork burdens for teachers, states, and local school districts.

Over the last decade, several reviews conducted in this area have focused on interventions for students with special needs in K-12 classrooms. One organization of note is the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC), which is conducted under a set of contracts held by several leading firms with expertise in education and research methodology, and managed by IES on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education. Specifically, the WWC reviews studies that examine the impact of interventions on the following outcomes:

  • Cognition
  • Emotional/Internal behavior
  • External behavior
  • Functional abilities
  • General academic achievement
  • Language competencies
  • Mathematics achievement
  • Progressing in school
  • Reading achievement
  • Reading comprehension
  • Reading fluency
  • Social outcomes
  • Social-emotional development
  • Writing achievement
