Why You Should Get a BSN

Those who already have nursing degrees often think they don’t need any further education in the field. If you’re one of these people, take the time to consider how much more you can do with an advanced nursing degree such as a BSN (Bachelor of Nursing). You can then be sure that you’re not missing out on opportunities that you’d actually enjoy having. Here are some of the things you can do with this degree:

Compete for Higher Nursing Positions

Many nursing jobs such as nurse practitioner, charge nurse, nurse supervisor and nurse educator require a BSN or equivalent just to meet the basic application qualifications. If you’d like to get into a higher position, you’ll need the degree. It will ensure that you have the knowledge needed to perform all of your additional duties. Additionally, if you become a nurse educator, your students will have more respect for your expertise.

Get Into Specialty Nursing Fields

Specialty fields often require evidence that you have an above-average level of education related to the field in question. This makes a BSN with a field-based focus very valuable. Depending on the field you choose, you could make more than twice as much as you do as an RN. You’ll also get to immerse yourself in a specific area of health care instead of generalizing, allowing you to do more of what you enjoy.

Open the Path to a Master’s Degree

A Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing is a powerful degree, but some positions require one that is even stronger: a Masters of Science in Nursing. Such positions include some hospital administrative roles, as well as certain nursing supervisor positions. It is normal for colleges and universities to require that master’s degree candidates first have a bachelor’s degree, so obtaining your BSN is often a necessary step along this path.
